Sardinia - the locals' travel favorite

Italians are a people who love to travel within their own borders. And it's not that hard to understand. On the Italian peninsula you can experience everything from snow-capped peaks and long golden beaches to the finest cuisine and a completely unique cultural history. There is plenty to experience in Italy.

When I ask my Italian friends where they are going on holiday this summer, their answer in over half of the cases will be Sardinia. This beautiful and lush island in the Tyrrhenian Sea just south of the French island of Corsica has become a favorite destination for Italians - and eventually also for the rest of the world. Because if you have only once experienced one of the adventurous Sardinian sandy beaches, which has been named the best in Europe, you will never want to try anything else.

But the great popularity also presents challenges. Especially between June and September, the population around the main attraction Emerald Coast is multiplied. This is not where you need to vacation if you want to be yourself for a while. But what most people do not know is that Sardinia is an island with many contrasts. Here I give you tips for Sardinia with a bid on five places that you should experience on your next trip there - besides the Emerald Coast.

Sardinia Bosa City Nature Travel

Bosa

Bosa is located on the river Temo south of Alghero. Temo runs through the city and contributes to a unique atmosphere. The river bank is surrounded by a picturesque center with colorful houses and an exciting street life.

Here you can sit at one of the local restaurants and have a good meal based on delicious and fresh local ingredients. Get inspired by the city as many artists have done over time.

Island of San Pietro

Off the southwest coast of Sardinia is the island of Isola di San Pietro, which you can reach by ferry from Portovesme. The largest - or indeed the only - town on Isola di San Pietro is called Carloforte. It is a lovely fishing village that is actually more reminiscent of Liguria than the rest of Sardinia.

Visit one of the town's restaurants and try the local specialty Bottarga di Tonno, which can best be described as air-dried tuna. Continue to the northern part of the small island where the coast is pristine and wild. Here you can admire the large rock formations, Le Colonne - 'The Pillars' - for which the island is so famous.

Sardinia Cliffs wall Isola Nuraghe Travel

Nuraghe

Sardinia has something that is not found anywhere else in the world; namely, a unique form of defense structure built in the 15th century BC. called 'nuraghe'. The towers are built of large rocks and are scattered throughout the island. It is estimated that there are between 7000 and 8000 nuragher on the island, but the Su Nuraxi di Barumini complex in the small village of Barumini is the best preserved and most famous. It was recorded on UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.

Sardinia Isola dell'Asinara Beach Travel

Asinara Island

Isola dell'Asinara gets its name from the Italian word for donkey - 'asino' - because the island houses a completely unique breed of albino donkeys. Apart from these, the island is in turn uninhabited.

The island served as a prison for convicted mafiosos until 1997. After that, it was laid out as a nature park, and in 2000, the public finally got access to the area for the first time in 115 years. And precisely because the island has been isolated for so long, you can experience completely pristine and incredibly beautiful beaches as well as a sparkling crystal clear sea.

Travel here by ferry from Porto Torres, Stintino or Castelsardo.

Cala Gonone Beach Travel

Cala Gonone - fantastic beach life in Sardinia

The beach of Cala Gonone, which is located in the province Nuoro, took fourth place in the selection of the most beautiful hidden beaches in Middelhavet, which was carried out by Lonely Planet magazine a few years ago. And it's easy to understand why. With a turquoise almost green sea and super fine sand on the beach, it is a very special experience to come here. The town of the same name has gradually become a tourist town, but has actually managed to retain its charm with a lively seafront and a cozy marina.
