Holidays in Austria: Graz is worth a lot more than you think

Graz is the size of Aarhus and is Austria second largest city. The city is close to the border Slovenia and is full of art, culture and not least culinary experiences. Really worth a visit.

At first glance, it is clear that Graz is a city in the middle of Europe with influence from all directions and at all times. Beautiful Italian-style Baroque and Renaissance houses are next door to futuristic buildings.

The classic meets the modern, and it all plays together. The city is big enough to be a big city, but small enough to be close to nature. And nature is everywhere within arm's length - that's how it feels at least.

Cultural holiday in Austria

The old town center is on UNESCO's World Heritage List, and there is long stretches of fun both out on the street and inside restaurants and cafés. It is clear that the city's university attracts many young people, who create lots of life in the cityscape and in the parks. The old buildings around the Hauptplatz emphasize Graz's long history. In the Joanneum quarter, you can satisfy your gallery and museum cravings with both modern and older exhibitions.

Although museums tend to look like each other after seeing many of them, you must not miss the Kunsthaus Graz, which stands out to such an extent. The building resembles a mixture of something from a biology book and something from outer space, and is therefore called 'the friendly alien'.

There is also a good opportunity to experience Austria's rich history and cultural heritage. This is, among other things, reflected in much of the city's architecture, which shows itself in the form of beautiful Gothic, Baroque and modern building styles.

Eating and shopping at Lendplatz

The Lend district has taken the hipster path. This is where modern art flourishes. In the morning there is a market on Lendplatz to which it belongs. The streets are full of hip shops where you can easily forget the time.

There is plenty of opportunity to indulge your shopping desire in several places in the city. Herregasse is probably one of the city's most iconic shopping streets, where trams and old buildings frame the experience. Around the Murafloden in the old town there are plenty of vintage shops and are you more into it malls, they are also to be found.

One must remember to pamper oneself, and for that purpose Graz is the perfect place. The Styria region, where Graz is the capital, is climatically perfect for fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and, not least, excellent wine. And then one must never forget that Austria is the cake lover's paradise, so the sweet things are of course also world class.

Although Austrian cuisine is probably best known for sweets and heavy meat dishes, in the last few years several cafes and restaurants have sprung up in Graz that focus exclusively on green cuisine with vegetarian and vegan menus.

Graz is obviously both old and young at the same time. The large number of students in the city, of course, helps to bring the city to life. Art, culture, events, music and ordinary walking in it. It is probably healthy for a city like this to have a large, young population so that the city is constantly evolving. Graz does, and that's why you should stop by.
